Many people have pretty good basement finishing ideas developed before calling a basement finishing contractor; however, they may have overlooked two important factors, the materials to be used and air ventilation.
Basements are prone to have high levels of humidity due to the fact that they are the low point of the home. Humidity settles in the lowest point therefore most basements have issues with mildew, mustiness and mold growth due to inadequate ventilation. Wood and drywall, even treated drywall, can absorb water vapor which will lead to mold growth.
Consider using non permeable (water repellent/resistant) materials for your basement finishing project. The Basement Tuxedo is one such product introduced about two years ago. It is paintable, washable, seamless and rigid like drywall yet it is waterproof.
You should also consider a ventilation unit to eliminate the basement humidity rather than a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers re-circulate the same air over and over and can circulate bad air and spores. Humidity ventilation units will eliminate humidity while exhausting stale air to the outdoors creating an air exchange that results in basement air that is healthy and dry.
